Diamonds and gemstones are weighted in metric carats. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams in weight. (Don't confuse carat with karat with a "k", as in 18kt Gold, which refers to the purity of gold.) For diamonds under one carat, each carat is divided into 100 points. For example, a 50-point diamond weighs 0.50 carats. Keep in mind that two diamonds of equal weight are not necessarily equal. You must factor in the other members of the 4C's: clarity, color, and cut.
